LLN Final Draft

One particular moment from my life where language and literacy played a role was in high school. Which was located in Chelsea Manhattan, the name of the school is Manhattan Business Academy. It was a big building that had other schools involved. It’s a small school located on the 2nd floor, the classrooms were average sized, with class note posters in the wall, and make up assignments where students would complete their missing assignment if they were absent that day. The worksheets the teacher would give us for class assignments were alright. We would go over with the questions with the class to speed things up. I would see other students asking others for the answer because they didn’t finish as the bell would ring and I would do the same just to get it over with. The teachers were very nice and helped us during the school years preparing us for the regents that would happen every June which was very annoying and we had to study to pass. Even if we didn’t pass we had to retake the regents in January or June. If you passed in January that means you don’t have to take it anymore, but if you failed you would have to retake it again in June, it was challenging to study for the regents and the fear of failing again especially with algebra 1 cause i failed the exam 4 times until i passed in June of 2024, which i was happy cause i didn’t have to be stressed with it anymore. Besides that the students were neutral, I had friends I talked to over the last 4 years and we would always go outside to the park  together during lunchtime

I would say the speech teachers I had at all 3 of the schools I went to really benefitted me for my education to develop and improve.  In my opinion my high school speech teacher played an important role in helping me learn how to write. She did a lot of things to help like practicing writing an essay and giving us outlines to structure the essay. I’ve always struggled with ELA, it has been my weakest subject. In particular, comprehension has been difficult for me as well as not being confident in choosing a specific answer. For example, when I would read a story I would have a difficult time understanding what it is about. However, it was helpful when my teachers taught us annotating and writing notes on the side and underlining key information during the reading.

Another moment from my life where language and literacy played a role was high school, this was in 12th grade, June of this year my government teacher assigned all of us a soapbox project, the instructions was to pick a topic that you want to write about , then you would be paired in a small group and a teacher and present the topic to them in the library, my reaction to this was a facepalm, cause it’s almost the end of the school year and she’s giving us another assignment like this, before she gave us an MLA assignment which i spent 6 hours on it typing it on the laptop.Leading up to the project i was kinda nervous, especially speaking  because during highschool i had a mask on for 4 years, which made speaking in front of others more challenging, like speaking loud so they can hear me despite having my face covered. Throughout high school I wore a mask because of the covid pandemic and I was very cautious. Even during lunchtime with my friends I would have a hoodie so I could be hidden, and this isn’t only me, the impact covid had affected a lot of people during lockdown era, schools going fully remote learning which i hated, but at the same time it was easy to get work done, minus the distractions, and my final middle school year was very boring due to the pandemic, it was a silent school year. During the days leading up to the soapbox project,I focused on preparing my presentation with the help of my speech teacher. She assisted me in improving my sentences and punctuation. I practiced presenting in front of my mother and my aunt one night as they listened. and with the help of my speech teacher fixing my sentences, and punctuation, making my speech more organized. Eventually when the day of my soapbox speech happened, minutes before we would be in small groups I kept looking at my paper, underlining key parts of what to say. When it was finally my turn, I felt nervous, but I knew I lowered my mask so they could hear me better. After I did my speech, I felt more calm and relaxed. I just need to stay calm  and get through it. It’s nothing to worry about.

Overall, my speech teacher played a significant role in improving my language and literacy skills, helping me improve my writing on how to structure an essay. The advantages I gained, modifying my writing approaches  for better understanding .
